Liverpool 0, Chelsea 2: Billionaire Blues barely beat a ten-man Reserve side... at home

What are ya gonna do? When three players of the opposition are worth more than your whole side in transfer fees, a 2-0 loss with only ten men on the pitch has to be considered a valiant effort. I didn't know Chelsea needed an ego boost that bad, but I guess I was wrong.

All our boys need to be commended for their performances. No one was particularly poor, though I thought Crouch missed an opportunity to step up and be a leader. I take that back actually, Xabi was well off his game, but you can't really get too down on him, it was his first match back in two months. Everyone else played at a high level and were tremendous when allowed, especially Sissoko and Itandje.

The ref was clearly duplicitous in his actions. While they were allowed to steamroll over our players, if we accidentally touched one of them, a foul was called. I was surprised they were so fragile and crumpled to the ground so easily being world-class and all. The yellow card on Lucas was especially harsh and the red card against Crouch was a complete joke, but we actually appeared to play better once the lanky one was gone, so I'll leave it at that. Abramovich continued his squeaky-clean record of paying for vacation homes for referees, but I'm a bit surprised he spent his money on a Carling Cup match. He is the billionaire though, so I'm sure he paid some genius to analyze the cost-reward benefits.

If I had to point out a negative though, I would have to say our lack of continuity. While at times, when attempting to control possession while remaining relatively static, we moved the ball around well enough, but when anyone would tried to set-up another player with a through-ball, the majority of anticipatory passes found themselves either in the middle of nowhere or at a Chelsea player's feet. On defense, I was aghast when are uncoordinated ganglia of defenders didn't lead to more goals for Chelsea, but we either recovered in time or the Blues were unable to take advantage. Carra was decidedly awesome, covering for a bewildered Hobbs, who's first trip to Stamford Bridge found him clearly out of his league.

In the end, this is just a League Cup match. The trophy matters less than experience given to players like Babel, Lucas, Hobbs, Itandje, and El Zhar. Chelsea did give Sinclair a run out, but apparently he wasn't up to par, so Joe Cole had to be brought on to give the Blues that much more of an edge... at home. Next up is Portsmouth on Saturday, let's hope all is well with Steven Gerrard by then. Cheers, and I will definitely be doing player ratings for this one, as I feel certain players really stepped up today and need to be credited for doing so.

At some stage we (Liverpool fans) are going to have to wake up to the fact that Rafa is not up to the job.

A reserve team out tonight for a Cup quarter Final...and a surrender against Reading with 20 minutes to go.

Loyalty is a fantastic thing....but for once we have to face reality.

I prefer the term 'idiot savant', but what ever suits you, audun.

well done boys for only losing 2 -0?

bpoor, penniless little liverpool could only afford to play a second team against nasty rich boys chelsea.

grow up mate, you lost fair and square just like chelsea lost at the weekend.

when did liverpool last lose and actually accept they were second best on the day?

I agree depressed red, but what was he supposed to do? Gerrard was ill, Agger is still hurt, and Hyypia is too old to play three times in seven days. I don't think playing Mascherano and Torres would have mattered and the way the officiating was allowing Chelsea to play, it could have lead to a critical injury. It's just the Carling Cup and if we have to sacrifice a contest, this is the one.

scb, that's some great analysis, maybe you should start your own blog. Unfortunately, it's the truth, Chelsea played their best side against our second string, at home, for the Carling Cup. That were the better side. Congrats!

Stevie Gerards...

What happens if we run out of Competitions to sacrifice?

He sacrificed three League points at Reading...now the Carling Cup.

I , and others are losing the belief in Raf (hope he proves me wrong)...wheres the never say die mentality that made this Club great...and that sadly exists in the teams above us in the League?

depressed red, it's situational. Rafa has to do what he has to do. Monetarily speaking the League Cup and FA Cup matter least. If he has to sacrifice the FA Cup, so be it. I doubt he will though.

As for the Prem, give it ten more matches. After then, if we're still this far out, then so be it.

I still don't think Rafa has the horses to give Man U a run for their money.

btw, depressed red, we play a premiership match on Saturday. if we had played our strongest possible side and lost and then lost on Saturday as well, which I don't think we will, all would have been lost. At least now Rafa can say he was giving some of the kids some experience.

sorry if i touched a nerve sgsob -- was just pointing out the absurdity of your story, having a go at chelsea for winning against liverpool.

how dare a team take the carling cup seriously and play a strong team. apologies to all liverpool fans. it's just denigrating the whole competition isn't it!

also, that was a strong side, but not a first choice chelsea team (maybe benitez could pick up a tip or two about team selection from avram grant).

Apology accepted scb.

I forgot that £6.6m Joe Cole and £100,00+ a week Bosman transfer Ballack came off the bench.

No, sir, let me apologize. I forgot the Carling Cup is on-par with the Champions League.

I was curious to see your comments. Skipped the match to ... ya know ... work, but followed on ESPN gamecast,. and from what I could tell about Liverpool ... Crouch was horrible and his red was well deserved, Xabi was rusty and firing from 30 for no reason, Sissoko was a liability on offense, Babel was MOTM and the substution was a shocker, Intadje was outstanding and the back line did their best. ESPN questioned the refs, thought Lampard was awful and both sides were sloppy.

Look forward to highlights later to get a better sense, but it seemed like - as you said - their big boys (Cole and Ballack coming on???) barely outplayed our reserves and future castoffs.

Boss, I enjoy reading your blog tremendously and I agreed with Rafa's decision to blood the youngsters. This is the kind of exposure we need to build the team long-term.

At the same time, I don't think whining about being defeated by an expensively built team is useful. The fact of life is that they're there, and we'll have to find a way to beat them with all their Russian mafia money. At the end of the day, we lost, and our second-string team showed they weren't good enough. That's nothing to be happy about in my book, even if it is just the Beer Cup.

if this is chelsea's best bet at taking home a piece of hardware this year then i say give it to them. if they need to run their own team into the ground for a lesser cup than i say laugh at them in the end when they finish in fourth, two spots behind us.
